I am thankful for my teenage years as a rebellious punk rock lover. It ignited the spirit within me of questioning authority, and seeing the need to “change the system.” Although I’m much more grounded in my perspective now that I’m older and wiser, that questioning nature has never stopped. In today’s world of food choices, it is more important than ever to “question authority.”
We are living in a time where large corporations like Monsanto are seeking to monopolize the food supply. No longer can we count on our fruits and veggies being wholesome sources of nutrients. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are showing up in all corners of the grocery store. It is important to be aware that GMOs are NOT labeled. It is up to us, the consumers, to educate ourselves about what is happening.
You might already be aware that more than 90% of ALL corn, soy, canola, sugar beets (unless specifies non-GMO or organic) are now GMO. Potatoes are also increasingly GMO. You may not think this is a big deal because you may think you only eat a little bit of corn and soy. However, these basic ingredients show up in our food supply in a multitude of ways.
Here are a few places you most likely will encounter genetically modified organisms:
Meat (feed lot animals are fed GMO grains and soy)
Dairy (also due to the diet of the animals)
Snacks (GMO corn, as well as GMO canola oil used to fry them)
High Fructose Corn Syrup (is added to so many foods from condiments to crackers)
If we desire to have a say in our own health and the health of our families, it is imperative to educate ourselves about the pervasiveness of GMOs. The long-term health effects of GMOs have yet to be determined, but there have been many studies done that indicate negative effects. Do you want to be a human guinea pig? I know I don’t!
GMO crops are designed to be pesticide-resistant, or even contain pesticide within it’s genetic code. YUCK! Do you want to eat something that contains a gene designed to destroy the intestinal tract of insects upon consumption? Ummm, no. GMO crops are heavily sprayed with chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals are not safe for consumption, and have been linked to cancer and birth defects.
Please, Just Say No to GMO! Don’t take part of the “food machine” which is destroying our precious planet with dangerous chemicals. We need to be modern day hunter/gatherers, and make smart decisions about our food. These huge corporations do not care about our health, or our ability to make intelligent decisions. Although the vast majority of North Americans desire labeling on GMOs, the big agriculture industry has heavily infiltrated politics, and has very very deep pockets.
We cannot afford ignorance on this issue, as it effects our own health, and the health of future generations. Together, our choices as consumers do effect the market. If we do not support GMOs, they will go down. The power is yours.
